The American Lung Association issued its annual State of the Air Report today,
a report that has traditionally seen a grade of ‘F’ year in and year out for
Imperial County.
The news conference offered local viewpoints from the American Lung
Association, the office of Air Pollution Control and the Clean Air Initiative.
Imperial Valley residents were asked Wednesday what they
think of the local air quality.
“As a part-time asthmatic, this air is terrible. Between the burning
fields and the wood-burning fires in Mexicali,
on a non-windy day it can be bad. My grandkids, when they come down from Los
Angeles to visit me, are sick two to three days each
and every time; and they’re from L.A.!”

“Other than by the Salton Sea, I think it’s all right.
I think it could be fresher, and I wish there wasn’t so much smoke.”
Arturo Borreli El Centro
“It’s pretty bad on the days that they’re burning fields.
It really messes the air up.”
Juan Cornejo El Centro
“It’s OK, I guess. But it gets bad on windy days like today, when the dust
flies up, and on the days they burn fields.”
