As air pollution issues continue to rise in Imperial County it was deemed necessary to make the Air Pollution Control District its own entity.

On Tuesday, the Imperial County Board of Supervisors made that split of the APCD formal by removing it from the umbrella of the Agricultural Commissioner’s Office and naming Brad Poirez new air pollution control officer.

“This is something I’ve been planning on for the last several years,” said Steve Birdsall, the most recent air pollution control Officer and agricultural commissioner. “It’s a good move and it’s the right time.”

Poirez has worked for the Air Pollution Control District for 15 years and has served as assistant control officer under Birdsall for the past six.

During Tuesday’s meeting Imperial County Farm Bureau Executive Director Nicole Rothfleisch and Ayron Moiola, executive director of the Coalition of Labor, Agriculture and Business, both supported the move.

Poirez said the discussion to make the split was one that had been ongoing and was almost inevitable.

“We’ve had the discussion the last couple of years to ensure that the department could sustain itself,” Poirez said. “And we just got to the point where we had grown and were able to carry out our mission.”

The split will also see the re-designation of 20 positions within the APCD.

Poirez said just last month he was offered the same job as air pollution control officer for San Diego County.

He said after considering his options it was best for him and his family to stay in Imperial County.

“Knowing that the separation was in the works for the past couple of years, I just felt it was best to stay here,” he said. “And I think as we move forward you’ll see a seamless transition.”

The environmental community in Imperial County is fortunate to have Brad Poiriez as the Air Pollution Control Officer. Splitting his department away from the Ag Commission is also a welcome move, and will increase ICAPCD's ability to protect our air quality.
